The 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane played unwitting host to a nation that Australia generally, and Queensland in particular, had previously done its utmost to forget. That summer in Brisbane they were both visited by a rude remembrance.
 
This was the first documentary directed and produced by indigenous Australians.

At the September 1982 Annual general Meeting of the Sydney Filmmaker’s Cooperative, “it was resolved that the Co-op would provide support to the Black Film Unit at the rate of one salary per year.”
 
Yet even as late as 1982 the first application to the Australian Film Commission for a supplementary grant to cover the cost of the Co-op’s support of the Black Film Unit was refused by the AFC.
 
Private funding came from Tim Rowse who donated $2,500 to the cause and a grant was provided by the NSW Consultative Committee (Brian Syron - Kicking Down The Doors. 2007).
